Hearing the Voice of God
In the same way the Spirit also joins to help in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with unspoken groanings. And He who searches the hearts knows the Spirit’s mind-set, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26-27 HCSV
I recently asked my colleagues and friends: “When you spend a day trying to listen to the voice of God on a decision what are the exercises or activities you go about doing? I thought it would be great to share this information with you knowing that all of us have important decisions before us.
First, it is important to prepare yourself for hearing the voice of God the night before. This should include the following: (1) contacting friends to inform them of your unavailability to talk or text for a set time; (2) You should set up an out-of-office response to emails leaving a physical contact in the case of an emergency;
Second, you should set an atmosphere to hear the voice of God. Proclaim a fast. Make sure not to do what is not His will during the day. Read lengthy passages of scripture slowly. Listen to music.
Third, make your request known. Write down specifically what are the questions or decisions that need to be made. Make your request known and cease to worry about the issues at hand according to Philippians 4:6-7.
Fourth, spend the rest of the day listening to God through the following mediums: (1)scripture, what is the Word of God saying regarding your issue as you read through Scripture; (2) consider what opportunities are before you; (3) get as much information as possible from people who know what you do not know and from other resources.
Finally, answer the question: what gives you peace? How will you know? Here is an acronym shared with me from Dr. R. T. Kendall
Providential (Is this a providential opportunity?) Eenemy (what would the enemy do? Do the opposite. Authority (what does the Scripture say?) Confidence (whatever you decide will that decision build confidence or not?) Eternal (in your heart of hearts what should you do?)
I hope this helps. It is really getting me through this season of my life.
